Who we are

Pasado Labs is an independent software company. We build tools for people who write, and our work concerns a single question: how do you show that a piece of writing was made the way its author says it was?

The company operates as Pasado Labs LLC, a limited liability company registered in the State of Illinois, United States. It is small and self-funded, and it develops its products in the open rather than announcing them before they exist.

What we are trying to do

Our stated purpose is to seek to define and preserve the human difference. Both halves of that are meant literally. Defining the human difference is a measurement problem — what, precisely, distinguishes one writer's work from another's, and what distinguishes a person's writing from a machine's. Preserving it is a product problem: giving a writer a durable record of how their own work came to exist.

Those are different disciplines and we treat them differently. The measurement work is research, and it is held to the standards of research — results are reported with their sample sizes, negative findings are published alongside positive ones, and a claim that has not been measured is not made.

How we work

We would rather ship something narrow and true than something broad and approximate. In practice that means our software is frequently more cautious than its competitors: where a tool could offer a confident verdict, ours often reports what was observed and declines to draw the conclusion for you.

That is a deliberate position. A tool that decides who wrote something will eventually decide wrongly, and the cost of that error falls on a person who has no way to answer it. We build records instead of verdicts.
